This immersive five-day workshop is your gateway to mastering the pottery wheel! Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, we’ll guide you step-by-step through the essentials of wheel throwing. Over just a few days, you’ll go from learning the basics to creating beautifully crafted pieces with confidence. By the end, you’ll have not only refined your skills but also shaped a deeper connection with the art of pottery. Perfect for anyone looking to get hands-on, have fun, and bring their creative vision to life!
Workshop Outline:
The course is spread over five sessions, each designed meticulously to cover various aspects of pottery wheel throwing.
Day 1: Let’s Get Started – Introduction to the potter’s wheel, tools, clay and wedging. We’ll introduce you to the potter’s wheel, the tools you’ll be using, and the feel of the clay. It’s all about getting comfortable and excited to create!
Day 2: Making Your First Forms – Refining centering techniques. Learn how to centre your clay and shape it into simple forms like cylinders and bowls. This session is all about finding your rhythm on the wheel. Our instructors will help you to get the basics of centering right. Practice till you get perfect. Remember, this is the fundamental step of getting better at working on the wheel, so no compromise, do your best!
Day 3: Playing with Shapes – Pulling, trimming, and altering shapes. Now that you know the art of centering, begin your journey to creating beautiful shapes. Take your skills up a notch by exploring advanced techniques like pulling clay into elegant shapes, trimming, and altering forms to make them uniquely yours.
Day 4: Adding Your Personal Touch – Introduction to surface decoration: carving and adding textures. This is where your creativity shines. We’ll show you how to decorate your pieces with carving, incising, and adding textures to give them character.
Day 5: Polishing and Perfecting – Focus on refining shapes, smoothing surfaces, and final touches. It’s all in the details! Spend this session refining shapes, smoothing surfaces, and putting those final touches on your pieces before they’re ready for firing.
Workshop Highlights:
- Structured learning from basics to intermediate wheel throwing.
- Hands-on practice and guided instructions.
- Creation of various pottery forms including cylinders, bowls, vases, and plates.
- Participants will have access to a lead instructor who will help you with techniques and there will be assistant instructors always available during your sessions.
- Firing and glazing are not included in the workshop fee. These are available at an additional charge of INR 500–800 per piece, depending on the size. The process takes approximately 1 week. Once your pieces are ready, you can collect them from Studio 1. If you’re unable to visit, we can courier them to your address at INR 300–400 per piece (depending on size). It will take 3-4 weeks for the pieces to be delivered (within India). For International shipping you can speak with us at the studio.
Location
At an elevation of 2100 m, Dharamkot is a small village in Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. Famous for yoga, meditation and Hippies since the 1970s, Dharamkot is also known as a second home for Israeli tourists coming to India. We are 2 km above McLeodGanj, which is home to the Dalai lama and the Capital of the Tibetan government–in–exile.
The Retreat Centre is located amidst the pine and cedar forest, completely secluded from the hustle–bustle of everyday life, yet easily approachable by road with a 5-minute walk to the village. Dharamkot offers wide views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar ranges. It has the world–famous Vipassana meditation centres– Dhamma Shikara and Tushita Meditation Centre.
The name Dharamkot Studio comes from the village of Dharamkot where it is located.
Weather
In July and August, Dharamkot experiences the lush beauty of the monsoon season, with frequent rainfall, misty mornings, and temperatures ranging between 15°C and 24°C. The forested landscape turns vibrant green, offering a peaceful, refreshing atmosphere ideal for slow living, creative work, and indoor activities like pottery, meditation, or reading. While the rain brings charm and quiet, it also means occasional slippery paths and travel delays. Still, for those who enjoy cooler weather, fewer tourists, and the calming rhythm of the rain, this is one of the most serene times to be in Dharamkot.
How to reach
By Air – Dharamshala airport (DHM) is the nearest airport which is around 20 km (50 minutes) from the studio, direct taxi (1500/-) to the studio will be available.
By Bus – Overnight journey from Delhi by semi-sleeper bus. The nearest bus station is Dharamshala (8 km), and from the bus station, you can take a taxi (Rs. 600/-) to the studio.
By Train – Pathankot (85km) is the nearest railway station, from Pathankot you can take public transport to Dharamshala and then a taxi to the Studio. Or you can take a taxi from Pathankot to the studio.
Team/Studio
The retreat is curated and conducted by a team of facilitators, resident artists and guides. In Dharamkot village we run 2 studio spaces, Studio-1 is for non-residential workshops while studio-2 is for the retreats and longer courses. Studio functions like an artist community, 20-30 resident artists, students and other staff members work and live here around the year in both studio spaces. So you will be a part of this community of artists fiddling with pottery wheels or bringing their imagination to life in this idyllic sanctuary.

FAQs
Q. Do I need any prior experience in pottery?
A-No prior experience is required. However, individuals with some prior experience can also benefit from refining their skills.
Q. Do I need to bring anything with me for the pottery workshop?
A- You just need to bring your spirit of learning and artistic streak. We provide all learning materials and art supplies to you.
Q. Can my workshop be rescheduled in case I am unable to come?
A- Residential workshop cannot be rescheduled. Non-residential workshops can be rescheduled. New dates that you choose will be subject to availability.
Q: Can I self-practise after my daily workshops are done?
A- Yes, you can start self practice from Day 2. You’ll have to pay INR 1000 for a two hour self-practice session.
Q. What other program can I choose apart from this?
A- You can opt for the Pottery Retreat, the Artist Residency Program or 5 Weeks Beginners Course.

The whole experience was beautiful.
Except for one mentor named Priyanka I believe, who was extremely rude and disinterested, felt like she ignored me and few others and focused only on few of the students.
Anyway, I would definitely recommend this place and activity to everyone.

I did the basic pottery class from here. I prepared 2 bowls, one was a simple bowl the other was a detailed cat shaped bowl. I spent over 2 hours making these. I came in again the next day and spent 3 hours to paint my cat bowl and handed them over for baking. When I returned the following week to collect them, the studio then informs me that they broke my cat bowl. They then made me wait for half an hour as they lost my other bowl as well! Such unprofessional behaviour and total waste of my time and energy. Wouldn't recommend.

I really enjoyed the pottery classes! I only took one session in each section, but it was totally worth it. The instructor was patient, the space had a great vibe, and it was such a relaxing, hands-on experience. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

I went there for a five-day pottery retreat as a complete beginner. I loved the gorgeous view of the hills covered with pine trees. Sunlight peaking through large panes of the studio, and then one afternoon, rain lashing outside, which later brings out beautiful-work-of-art skies in the evening. Silently, the clarity of the outside seeps in and brings you a clarity inside with all its colours. While you learn to play with clay, something meditative heals you amidst the presence of figurines around you. A magnificent eagle here, a serene Buddha there, some wind chimes swaying near the entrance, shining glazed-ceramic bowls and mugs on the shelves, and a life-like pumpkin taking shape as a lamp. As new works of art come to life around you, artists dedicated to their craft pour all they have (and all they are) into what they’re making.
This place is Poetry in action, living and breathing art from morning to evening, while the star-lit skies intrigue your nights.
This is also a place to meet like-minded people supporting you in your journey of creation, which might surprisingly lead you to some pleasant discoveries of the self.

Attended a five-day pottery retreat at Dharamkot Studio in June 2025 along with my mum. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - the pottery trainers were very knowledgeable and patiently explained the process to us - our artwork turned out very well under their expert guidance! The other experiences (meditation, sound healing, nature walk, sightseeing) were also thoughtfully planned, and the five days were a nice break from work.

The location is beautiful..the rooms very spacious with incredible views..its relaxing the moment you step into their property. The instructors as well as the staff is like one big community who are always ready to help you with your queries. The schedule is busy but not very packed.... with morning walks, yoga, meditation session also part of everyday activities. It was my first time trying pottery and really have fallen in love with this art..thanks to Dharamkot Studio! 🙂

I didn’t expect to learn that much in only 2 hrs. I absolutely loved it - playful and mindful at the same time. Very knowledgeable and kind and patient instructors. Can highly recommend it!

Took an amazing 5 day wheel throwing workshop. My instructor Kapil was awesome and very patient with me. I actually managed to make vessel and will be able to continue creating pieces in the future.

This place is amazing for adults as well as for kids to open their creativity. Different workshops can be done depending on the time you have in front of you, from 2hours to 5 weeks course. I really recommend this place and the cafe’s food is the cherry on the cake 😉

Excellent teachers ambience food and quietude. The course was designed so well we were taught all that was promised looking forward to the residency programme. Dharamkot gives you the perfect taste of art, culture, nature, and community in all the right proportions. I learned a variety of local painting styles and techniques from stellar artists, each a master of their own craft. My accommodation was clean and comfortable, and had a spacious shared sit-out that offered spectacular views. Imagine waking up to the smell of pine and fresh air!! There are also ABUNDANT nature trails, markets, and cafes/restaurants to check out (sooo many quirky ones!), which made staying at Dharamkot even more delightful. I met some truly wonderful folks that week and had many, many inspiring conversations with them. Huge kudos to the Dharamkot Studio crew for putting together these retreats so thoughtfully.
The time I spent there has genuinely awakened part of my soul. 🙂 I will be holding on to memories I made there for life.

Dharamkot Studio is a dream and the pottery retreat is one of the best things I signed up for this year. While learning a little about pottery, we went on long walks, attended morning meditations, did a walking tour and ate the best food ever. The location is perfect with not too much noise around and the views are spectacular. The teachers and everyone else at the studio are warm and friendly and ready to help in anyway that they can. I would love to go back again!

I did the week long course/ retreat! I met some wonderful people at the studio! The food was a highlight for me! It was so healthy and very authentic. The teachers were all very knowledgeable & they made the process of learning new techniques efficient and fun 🤩 I felt very inspired & would be interested in coming again! I would recommend to everyone who is interested in making some artistic time for themselves! You will try new techniques, improve your craft, and you’ll want to continue practicing pottery much more!

It is the perfect place for a creative retreat. The location, the people, the art, the locals, the calm and the amazing food at the studio! I did the 5 day pottery retreat, and i did not just learn about pottery, but so many other things through this medium of creativity. The sightseeing and other activities included along with the retreat was a break which helped us get familiar with the natural beauty that Dharamkot and Dharamshala has to offer us.

I was here with my wife who for long time wanted to visit and join the classes. This time we made it and she got the experience of hands on. The atmosphere here is awesome to learn and she was really well trained as per her expectations. Would be visiting soon again with kids and will get to learn more next time.

This is a wonderful place run by people who are genuinely passionate about pottery. I learned a lot there, the instructors are very generous with their time and really make sure that people get the most out of their session in a friendly atmosphere. 100% recommended!

This place has my heart. I have been here twice in the last two years and whenever I think of taking a break from my life in the city and away from my home studio - Dharamkot studio is always what comes to my mind. I went there first for a three week creative retreat where I was accommodated into their busy daily schedule very warmly. I was already a few courses into pottery by that time, but what I learnt at Dharamkot studio was to let go of my fears of clay and the egotistical and harmful pursuit of perfection. Clay is play and must be approached with surrender and love is what they taught me. The space is shaped by Manoj and Sadaiv and Vivek who themselves are self taught potters and have come a long way to build a space so warm and creative - they have nurtured other amazing talents in that same spirit like the super warm Pragya who is the heart of the place, the crazy and wickedly talented Kapil and the other permanent members, tutors and volunteers in that space.. I owe a big time to them for my journey into pottery and I recommend this space more than any others in the country when you want to just dabble with clay for the first time or to do an artist residency. They are never stern, never stuck up on any particular style, allow you to explore your relationship with clay even if it’s your first encounter with it and show you pathways of how you can truly express with it. They will take care of your pieces and kindly ship them to you in any part of the country once fired. Pottery is generally an expensive practice to learn but what Dharamkot Studios offers in their packages is unmatched and priceless. And mind you they are still less expensive than a lot of other spaces in the country without any pretence. I wish them all my heartiest blessings to be the space they have nurtured and created so well with their heart and that they build one of the foremost artist communities in the country. I consider them a family and it was heartening to see they welcomed me and my friends back to their fold after two years just like one of their own.

I highly recommend experiencing Dharamkot Studio’s classes if you’re planning to visit the Dharamkot/McLeod area!
I attended two very beautiful pottery making sessions! This was at their smaller studio and it’s a lovely place with lots of natural light and air.
First was the hand building class with Pragya and Anjali. They’re both very attentive and gentle teachers, with their own unique styles. So much talent! They’d take turns giving personal attention to each participant so all of us benefited from both of their knowledge.
Second session involved working on the pottery wheel. The introductory demonstration was done very nicely by Ananya. Then we all got to sit at our own wheels and begin working.
Our teachers were Kapil and Abhinav. They were both kind and patient with all of us. Again with their own styles of teaching, taking turns to personally guide each student.
Though the studio has fixed timings and everything, they’re also flexible when necessary. I have to thank Vivek for being so helpful with the process or booking, changing dates, collection of my pieces, etc. I only needed to reach out to him and he coordinated smoothly with everyone involved to make it seamless for us.
Special thanks to Abhinav for coming in on their weekly holiday so I could collect my baked+glazed pieces. I truly appreciate it!
