Places to Visit Around Dharamkot
Beyond the clay and kiln, Dharamkot unfolds as a mosaic of calm forests, sacred walks, and timeless Tibetan influences. These nearby spots invite quiet exploration and a deeper connection with the rhythm of the mountains.
1. Bhagsu Waterfall & Temple
A short walk from Dharamkot, the Bhagsunag Temple and its cascading waterfall are local landmarks steeped in mythology. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, holds quiet morning rituals, while the waterfall beyond it becomes a place for reflection — or a cold, cleansing dip.
Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning to hear the temple bells before the crowd arrives.
2. Triund Trek
One of the most loved hikes in Himachal, the Triund trail begins right above Dharamkot. It’s a half-day trek through rhododendron forests, leading to breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar range. The trail embodies the stillness and effort that make this region so grounding.
Pro Tip: Start before sunrise to watch the first light touch the snow peaks — an unforgettable moment.
3. Tushita Meditation Centre
Tucked into the pine forest, Tushita is a Buddhist meditation centre offering silent retreats and introductory courses in Tibetan Buddhism. Even if you don’t join a course, visitors can sit in the gardens, browse the library, or simply absorb the peace of the space.
Pro Tip: Check the notice board outside for open meditations and evening Dharma talks.
4. Norbulingka Institute (Approx. 30 min drive)
A serene institute dedicated to preserving Tibetan art and culture. The campus is home to workshops in thangka painting, wood carving, and metalwork — all created by Tibetan artisans. It’s also a living lesson in how tradition can blend with contemporary creativity.
Pro Tip: Don’t miss the Doll Museum, which beautifully depicts scenes of Tibetan village life.
5. Dal Lake
A small sacred lake surrounded by deodar trees, Dal Lake sits quietly between McLeod Ganj and Naddi. Locals believe its waters are blessed, and the small temple on its edge adds to the sense of timelessness. It’s a perfect spot to pause after a morning walk.
Pro Tip: Visit during monsoon or post-rain for the most vivid reflections.
6. Naddi View Point
A short drive from Dharamkot, Naddi offers one of the best vantage points of the Dhauladhar range. On clear days, you can see the entire mountain ridge unfold in silence. Sunset here turns the peaks gold — an experience that often lingers longer than a photograph.
Pro Tip: Carry a small mat or notebook — it’s a beautiful spot to sit, sketch, or write.
7. St. John in the Wilderness Church
Built in 1852, this stone church lies hidden among tall cedar trees near McLeod Ganj. Its Gothic architecture and stained glass windows create a quiet, almost surreal atmosphere — a glimpse of the colonial past that shaped parts of the region.
Pro Tip: Visit on a weekday morning to have the entire churchyard to yourself.
8. The Tibetan Museum & Main Temple (Tsuglagkhang Complex)
The heart of McLeod Ganj, this complex houses the Dalai Lama’s residence, the main temple, and the Tibetan Museum. The prayer wheels, monks in maroon robes, and sound of chanting all create a deeply moving sense of presence.
Pro Tip: Walk the Kora path around the temple — it’s a circular prayer route lined with mani stones and views of the valley.
9. Gallu Devi Temple
Perched at the edge of the forest above Dharamkot, Gallu Devi Temple is a lesser-known sacred site. The trail leading up is gentle and full of pine fragrance, and the view from the top opens to both valleys.
Pro Tip: Combine the visit with a short nature walk — the silence here is unlike anywhere else.
10. Dharamshala War Memorial
For a glimpse into modern history, the War Memorial honors soldiers who fought in India’s post-independence wars. Surrounded by cedar groves, it’s both a place of remembrance and reflection on how layered Dharamshala’s story truly is.
Pro Tip: Combine it with a stop at the nearby Kangra Art Museum for context on regional heritage.
